How long does it take Detroit to retool an auto factory?

Question

If GM/Ford/Chrysler wanted to change product lines from SUV's to something more fuel efficient, would they build new plants or retool the old ones? How long would each take?

Apparently not quick enough.. it appears they would rather risk everyone loosing thier jobs then actually change because of changing demands and markets.  The fuel crisis is not something that happened overnight.. gas has been going up in price since the mid 80's.

Way longer than it takes the Japanese transplants.  Detroit takes weeks, and still doesn't get it right...
