  1. as juliane said, there is no standard, and it depends on whether the foal is weaned or not. if a foal is weaned completely from his mother,  is separated with no contact, and was weaned at the correct time (not too early), then the mare should dry up within a week, but some mares take longer. and if you have a mare whose foal was just weaned, dont "milk her", even though it may seem tempting because her teats looks so swollen and painful; it will just prolong her milk production and make her take longer to dry up.  


  2. It depends on if her foal is still with her or not.

    Once the foal is weaned, it can take anywhere from days to months for the mare to dry up.  There is no standard, every mare is different.
