  1. Shin splints don't last too long.. I always used to get them when I played soccer and the best thing to do is stretch and ice the shin afterwards.  One of the best things to do is just sit down and pull your foot (toes) down and then up... do this slowly, but make sure you put pressure.  This typically does hurt for a while but helps it go away faster.. at least in my experiences.  But as soon as you can, put some ice on it or wrap the ice around it.  I'd say you'll be fine in terms of walking after maybe 15 20 minutes... but probably a couple hours before you don't feel it anymore.  but your best bet is to stretch it and ice...


  2. It depends how you are being treated for shin splints.  Are you casted? If so and with plenty rest approx 4-6 weeks.  Remember when the cast comes off you will have to gradually start exercising again otherwise you'll end up with the same problem.  Ask your physiotherapist about returning to sport - they will give you a guideline of how much you should be doing and how often.
