  1. as an x London underground train driver a 6 car train apx 300 tons or more at 60 mph full brakes 1/4 mile

a high speed train on British rail at 125 mph about 2 -2 1/2 miles apx

  2. A very long time and a great distance.

It varies somewhat, according to weight and length of the train, the grade, and the speed at which the train is traveling.

On average, with an average train of 10,000 tons, in full emergency at a speed of 50 mph or above, figure a mile or so, rule of thumb.

Bottom line, if I'm the engineer and you come into my view, it is already too late to stop.  It is up to people to stay out of the TRAINS' way.  They cannot go around you and I cannot stop.  The outcome of such an event is never good news for anyone.

Here's your star.  Thanks for asking an important safety question.  And, tell your friends.

  3. It depends on the weight and the speed of the train, weather conditions, and the type of locomotive.

Expect between one mile and two miles for a controlled stop.

  4. It varies by train, operating conditions and weather....
