1:36 is a fairly quick horse. stakes horses will do  better, your cheap maidens will of course be slower. that's figuring a 1 mile track which is by far the most common.

It depends on the distance around the track.  smaller "bullring tracks are ususally less than a mile long, while larger ones are usually a mile or more.  In general hower, horses usually run in the general area of about 12 seconds per furlong, which is 1/8 of a mile.  Also take into account that some tracks are easier to run on which may help a horse run quicker, while others are much harder to run on, which slows a horse down.
