  1. About half an hour. What you should do is put on some really heavy boots, a winter coatr and a thick woolen scarf and test the ice by jumping in one spot several times.

  3. Seriously it takes at least several days if not weeks of constant below freezing temperature for ice to get thick enough to walk on.

    Another thing to keep in mind is that ice freezes from the shore in so even if the ice is 4" thick at the edge, it may be a lot thinner in the middle of the lake.

    Your best bet is to go with someone experienced and be on the safe side if you're not sure.
