Question:

How long does it take for alcohol to leave breastmilk?

OK, so my wife and I haven't had s*x in forever (once since November 2007. Twice if you count non-intercourse. Yes. I am a saint--as long as p**n doesn't count). I want to take her out, get her drunk and then do all the things I used to do to her before we got married. She won't drink because she's breastfeeding. I say use formula for a day or two until the alcohol leaves my wife's system? (She can pump and throw the bad milk out, right?) Alcohol doesn't stay in the system THAT long does it?

  1. I think it only stays in your system for a few hours then its ok to breastfeed. She will probably want to ask a doctor to make her feel better tho just so she will go along with your plains.

  2. She doesn't need to pump and throw it away, breast milk filters itself after time. Once she starts to sober up her milk will be fine. She should pump extra milk during the day before you go out so that she's got a couple bottles ready for the baby that night and she should be fine by morning.

How old is the baby and how often does she breastfeed. This will determine how much she would try to pump out prior to going out. She could even start preparing by pumping and storing the milk the day before you guys plan on going out and she should have plenty for the baby sitting to feed the little bub.

  3. Here is a GREAT article about it.

It says 2-3 drinks are fine to have. She should avoid breastfeeding for 2-3 hours after drinking and there is no need to pump and dump as alcohol leaves the milk as it leaves the blood. Obviously if she is drinking more than that (which actually she may not have to since after that long of not drinking it doesn't take much to get drunk!!) you should wait an average of 1 hr per drink. General consensus is if you're sober enough to drive you are sober enough to breastfeed.

Here is a chart of how much expressed breastmilk she will probably need for your baby while you are gone. I wouldn't give her formula as your wife will be leaking everywhere from not pumping and it will be very painful for her. It also might upset the baby's stomach. This calculator will tell you how much she should pump.

If you have never given the baby a bottle before you should try it a few times before that night to make sure he/she will take it. Have someone else give it to her though because if she smells your wife she may refuse the bottle and want the breast.

Have fun on your night out!

  4. If you have to get your wife drunk so she'll have s*x with you, that's a bigger problem than her breast feeding after a couple drinks =]

Anyway, don't use the formula, that will cause her to get mastitis (from clogged milk ducts) and her supply will decrease because the milk isn't being extracted for the baby. Breast milk is produced on a Supply & Demand basis; the more demanded, the more supplied. The best thing your wife can do is pump BEFORE she drinks the alcohol and store the milk to give to the baby while she's drunk. After she has a few drinks, she can 'pump and dump' her milk. She should only have to 'pump and dump' one feeding of breast milk and then the alcohol should be out of her milk.

If she only has 1-2 drinks, she doesn't have to pump and dump, the alcohol will be processed through her body and won't affect her breast milk, ...

But it sounds like you really wanna get her wasted so she'll sleep with you (which is still REALLY odd!) .. but to each their own, have fun .. and don't try and push the formula idea on her.
