How long does it take for an adult to learn Braille?

About how long does it take for an adult (30 years old) to learn to read Braille if she didn't lose her sight until adulthood?

Braille can be learned in its basics in a few months. The full transcribers course with all the details takes 9 months of weekly.  You should contact Hadley school for mail classes and your state commission on the blind to get a Perkins Brailler and get signed up for braille and talking reading material.  Braille paper in full size is 11x11 with a slick surface that is available from many sources including some Lighthouse for the Blind operations and the American Printing House for the Blind although index which has a rougher surface and comes in 8.5x11.

  My wife has been blind since birth.  I can sight read Braille essentials and use a stylis and slate to send post cards when traveling but am not good at touch.  Depending on why you went blind, you may have problems as diabetics who lose their sight often have loss of feeling in the their fingers as well.

Well, it depends. It doesn't take weeks, that's for sure. Yes, you can learn some words and letters, and even maybe learn basic sentences in a couple of weeks, but not become a fluent braille reader in a couple of weeks. There are six dots, like in a dice, and that determines what letter or number or even symbol.

my son was born blind so i didnt wait long to learn braille it took me about 6 months to understand the basics you just have to be really determined to learn

This is for babies that need to learn braille but its a great start for me

An entire lifetime! ... Why you want to use Braille, without having a handy cap? That's like saying, how long will it take for an adult to become deaf if he/she was not deaf from birth? ... Not understanding this importance!
