  1. It is faster than it used to be.  Usually it is overnight but it depends on the State.   So, don't get caught without insurance because the DMV will get notified and cancel your car registration, as least in California.

  2. Answer from a General Insurance Agent

Most companies are now required by law to do state filings by electronic means.

Most of them now do this through the internet after 12:00 midnight. There are some that are still using mailed magnetic media either once or twice a month. So it really just depends on what reporting method is implemented by your insurer.

Internet filings are of course the most cost effective and efficient way to go and is therefore the preferred method.

    Good Luck and Happy Motoring.

  3. are you trying to get new plates without proof of insurance and need them to contact the DMV or do you already have plates that are not expired yet, if the latter is true you probably should get insurance right away or you might run into trouble if you get pulled over for anything when the officer runs your tags to check for any warrants or information on you. If he asks for proof of insurance for any reason then you might be in a little bit of trouble.

  4. I would be more concern getting into a car accident without car insurance. Your drivers license will automatically be suspended by DMV faster them you can say hello. Not to mention the lawsuit that follows for the   damages. That comes out of your own pocket. Getting insured after the accident will not cover the accident. Play it safe and get insured.

  6. It's not about the company, it's about the state.  Anywhere from 3 days, to six weeks.   But the average is one week.  They upload "tape" once or twice a week to the DMV, so it ALSO depends on how close to the next upload, your insurance cancels.
