  1. Big companies get hundreds of applications for every job advertised ..

There will be an 'end date' for applications .. typically 4 or more weeks after the advert is posted.

As the end date approaches, the 'normal' process (typically) involves HR Dept. screening out 50-80% of the applicants and then the hiring Manager chooses half a dozen to call for interview.... this usually means that you are called for interview within a week of so either side of the end date.

If you have heard nothing by a couple of weeks after the end date, chances are you did not make the 'cut' ..

One trick is to ring them up just before the end date to 'make sure they have your application' .. this results in HR digging it out of the pile and can  mean your CV ends up 'on top' .. (where it could the the first accepted or the first discarded :- )

NB> HR looks for reasons to REJECT your application, mainly from what you say in the covering letter (your CV may only checked if your covering letter shows no reason for rejection).. the hiring Manager looks for reasons to ACCEPT you, mainly by reading your CV ...

Example of HR rejection - job advert says 'minimium 5 years experience required', your covering letter says 'I have 3 years experience' = REJECT .. you say 'I have multiple years relevant experience' = no reject.
