  1. depends, but usually the first month of pregnancy!!

  2. The split will almost always take place within the first few days.  But, here are some interesting facts:

When the egg splits in the first two days after it has been fertilized, the resulting identical twins will likely have separate placentas, chorions, and amnions (sacs).  Most often the egg will split after two days, which then results in twins sharing a placenta but maintaining separate sacs.  Rarely, when the split occurs late enough, the result is twins sharing every element, including the same sac (A very high risk pregnancy due to umbilical cord entanglement).  And even rarer still, a particularly late split will likely result in conjoined twins.

  3. On average, it happens when the egg has four cells to it, and two go to each fetus. It does occur in the first two days of pregnancy, that's why women pregnant with twins tend to get quick results with high hcg levels on tests. Good luck!

  4. Generally not, it usually happens within the first few divisions though, so within the first few days after conception.

  5. Technically, yes. The eggs split within the first few hours of the sperm getting into the egg.  But its usually not known for sure if they are classified as identical twins until about week 12-14 when the dr. can take measurements and look at placentas on the ultrasound.

  6. Pretty much, The cells start spliting straight away and when it's split into 4 cells, 2 go to each twin and the cells keep doubling for each one again and again forming the babies. It's a miracalious thing to see your own dividing cells on a microscope that's for sure, the one thing I was in total awe about when doing iVF/ICSI. amazing stuff.
