Just wondering how long, does it depend on the area? I know water will disappear even inside a household or room. Is this even a relevant question?

  1. yes it depends on the surface area. the wider the glass is, the more water will evaporate quickly...try it!!! experiment!!!

  2. The only effect the sun has on the evaporation of water is that it provides heat, and warm water and warm air will result in faster evaporation. The time it takes depends on water temperature, air temperature, humidity, surface area, and air currents, so it will vary a lot.

  3. only way to find out is to try it!

  4. the sun doesnt absorb it but it is evaporated into the atmosphere. A glass - maybe a day or 2... no idea.

  5. If you put it outside and the sun is shining brightly, it will take 2 days.

    Indoors 5 days or more,

  6. The sun doesn't absorb the water.  The water evaporates and becomes water vapor in the air.  The speed of evaporation is increased by higher temperature and lower humidity where the glass of water is located.

I didn't think to consider surface area because you said "a glass of water", but it is correct that increasing the surface area will also increase the evaporation rate, as some of the other answerers have said.

  7. The sun doesn't 'absorb' the water ... the water evaporates.  The length of time it takes for an 8 ounce glass of water to evaporate depends on the humidity where it is sitting and how 'wide' the glass is.  If you spread 8 ounces of water out until it's 1/4 inch it will evaporate (turn to gasses) much more quickly than if it's in a tall, narrow beaker.  So the 'area' is one thing that needs to be measured ... also the 'humidity' (the amount of water as gasses) of the air in the room.  Wind makes water evaporate more quickly, too ... try measuring out several 8 ounce glasses of water and do some experiments to see the differences in the time it takes to evaporate fully.

  9. First of all, the sun doesn't "absorb" water, it evaporates water. How long this takes depends on wind, temperature, relative humidity of the air, the amount of sunlight falling on the glass, the surface area of water exposed to the air, and even the color of the glass and its transparency. Because all of these factors are variable, the question cannot be answered precisely.
