  1. Steroids are not the answer and if your only planning to take them so you can easily put on muscle, that's the easy way out.

Why don't you just lift hard, eat a lot of protein, and quick being a coward towards muscle building? Steroids mess you up badly, anyway.

  2. You will start shortly after your kidneys stop working. Don't be a looser, stay away from them.

  3. the average guy has no chance of putting on 40 pounds of muscle in 2 years.  maybe 20, tops.

normal steroids are just straight testosterone injections, its basically like going through puberty all over again but a lot quicker.  i wouldnt recommend them (seing as how you are 18 and have potential to grow on your own, and that if you abuse steroids there are many harmful side effects).

but to answer your questions (not saying i've done them, i read a lot and talk to guys at the gym), there are many different kinds, some to get big, some to get cut, some to just get stronger.  size increases will start around week 2.  lift everyday, it basically elliminates recovery time, lots of weight and low reps, eat as much as possible.  you could gain 20 pounds in 8 weeks if you arent a hard-gainer.

  4. you don't need steroids at 18 you need to master compound exercises and you need to eat 5-6x a day.  insulin is the most anabolic hormone in the human body.  steroids or not the diet is what gives you the energy to train hard and heavy and provides the building blocks for muscles. steroids are not the magic bean that the very uniformed media makes them out to be.

if you just started lifting you can easily gain 40 lbs of muscle in the first 1-2 years with a proper diet.  when you first start training gains comes the easiest because the body is in it's highest most untrained state.  gains in muscle come slower and slower the longer you have been in the sport and  progress towards the natural genetic potential, which takes a good 10-15 years to reach.
