Follow the signs for Metrolink, the trams which pull underneath Piccadilly Station. Buy your ticket from the machines on the platform. Be sure to catch an Altrincham tram, that will be the only one which goes to Trafford Bar.

The tram journey itself only takes 15 minutes, but it depends what time of day you're travelling as to how frequent the trams run. You may only wait 5 minutes for one, or it may be up to 15 minutes, so I'd allow 20-30 minutes to make the trip.

The ticket machines are notorious for spitting back coins and the driver will not wait as you fuss with your change...
