How long does it take putty to dry?

I replaced a large dinning room window myself last week - one of the children broke it and the glazier wanted more money than I had - but the putty still seems soft. Does anyone know how long it will take to harden?

  1. putty takes about 2 week to harden . you should paint it thought to keep it on the window. glazier of 20 years

  2. Hi!! much depends how soft it was to begin with. Next how thick the application, but it sould be set in 4 days but could take up to 2 weeks to really harden.

Good on yer girl a D.I.Y. exponent.I like it.

  3. One of the reasons putty has been used by glaziers for so long is that if painted it never really goes hard and dries out completely.

Putty is used as a sealant more than a fixative, and after it has been painted will remain reasonably flexible and a good sealant for years to come, not hard not soft.

If you see a derelict house where the paint has dried and peeled off, you will usually see the putty has dried out completely too,it has cracked and fallen away, all the natural linseed oil which keeps it as a good sealant has dried out.

  4. you do not want the putty to dry. Get it painted over as soon as you can. The paint will keep the putty from drying out as if this happens the putty will  crack and start comming loose
