  1. As bostonian stated, it can take 6 to 8 weeks when a paper return is filed.

I mailed my tax return on April 14.  I owed which is why I filed as late as I did.  The check I wrote cleared the bank on or about April 30th.  I received my tax rebate via direct deposit on June 20th.

  2. Typical processing time for a mailed paper return with a refund due and paid by mail is 6 to 8 weeks.

Returns with a balance due go to the tail end of the processing queue since there's no need to process them in a timely fashion.  They are processed "as possible" and can take several months to process if other workloads dictate.  The payment is stripped from the return as soon as it's received and credited to the taxpayer's account but the return will then sit until resources are available to enter it into the system and begin processing.

  3. QNA:  I filed my return on April 14th and they cashed my check on April 17th.  According to IRS today, my return is just now (6/23) being processed.  It will be 10 weeks since I filed on Thursday.

  4. As has been stated, 6-8 weeks is average during the filing season. It's much quicker at other times of the year. Contrary to another post, balance due returns do not take "several months" to process.

Processing can be delayed due to errors on the return. Frankly, I don't know why anyone sends in a paper return anymore.

  5. I have filled my 2007 Tax Return via Paper. IRS has taken almost 10 weeks to process my return and it has sent a notice to pay the additional tax amount I owe by making correction in my return .....
