How long does it take thompson's water seal to dry?

I think my husband got it too thick in some areas.

Depending on the humidity and the outside temperature. It will soak in quickly. but not dry completely for about 8 hours. Check the label for more specific times.

It should soak in quickly and dry in 30 minutes or so.

depending on weather conditions...we allow 12-14 hrs.....perfer 24 hrs...

Depends upon how many coats are applied.  Usually, the sealer will take approximately 2 hrs to dry, but 8 hrs to cure.  By curing, I mean for the sealer to penetrate the surface and not be diluted by any water/rain. If you can apply it early in the AM, it should be cured by evening.
