Question:

How long does it take to adjust to braces?

My twins age 13 just got braces yesterday and they are having a really hard time with them. They are sore but that's not even the biggest issue. It's eating. They say they can't bite down right because their teeth are hitting the braces and they say it's hard to chew. plus they hate the feelings of all the food getting caught everywhere. I bought a ton of soft foods like jello and pudding and cream of wheat cereal but they aren't eating much.

How long will it take for them to adjust? They keep saying they think they put them on wrong and are whining about how they'll never eat again. I keep reminding them it will get better. Anyone have any experience with trouble eating with braces?

  4. ya i could not really eat much for like 5 days, but after a week you cant even really feel them

and if you have any questions then just call your denist

  5. I have braces.

When I first got them it took me about a week to adjust.

My teeth were very tender, especially my front teeth. This tenderness should go away within a week or so.

They may also experience sores on the inside of their cheeks from the braces, and their dentist should have a type of fluid that they can wipe onto the inside of their cheek to protect it.

Also, if the brackets bother them, the dentist can also give you wax that you can stick onto the brackets.

Basically all they have to do is get used to it. It'll stop hurting soon and they won't even feel their braces anymore.

You should also buy them a fluoride mouthwash because sometimes food can get stuck between the brackets and doesn't come out when you brush. The fluoride will help protect their teeth from cavities.

  6. I had braces for 19 months! After about a 4 days you get used to them. And then after they are tightened each month they hurt for about 2-5 days.

I would try to get them to eat soup and mashed potato's soft stuff like that for a few days. And use the wax stuff they should have been given so the brackets don't rub on their lips...trust me it will get better. Also some kind of pain killer is ok to use!

I think the worse part was the metal things they put around your back teeth. They hurt so bad!

  7. Lol, yes. I wore braces for 2 1/2 years (5th grade-end if 7th grade.) I HATED them and yes, it was very painful eating at first. I only ate ice cream for the first week. I think it took me about a week to adjust...maybe a little more. When they get tightened, it hurts a LOT too, but not as much as when they first get on. I think they'll adjust fine.

  8. They are no fun, and do hurt, and everytime they get tightened they will hurt.  It does make it painful to eat, but they will get used to them.

  9. hey, i had braces for about a year and a bit.

the first week is tough! so i know how they feel, but trust me... after that it is fine (except it gets a bit tender after tightening appointments).

about the food in teeth..... yeahhh its annoying, lol... buy a really good mouth wash for them so they can guzzle it and it actually gets most of the food out, so thats good.

good luck for them! and you :)

  10. It took me a few weeks to learn how to chew with braces. It's so annoying! Braces are soooooooo worth it though! I got mine off a year ago, and my teeth are beautiful!

  11. about 3-5 days until the soreness goes away.

about a week until they get used to them.

  12. It takes awhile to adjust.

Try some mashed potatoes and soup, too, if they are hungry for other foods.

I had braces two different times, and believe me, it's not fun. They probably didn't put them on wrong, it just feels awkward to have them in your mouth when you're still not used to it.

Did the orthodontist give them wax?

If so, just put it on the braces where it's bothering them, and it won't rub against the inside of their mouth so much.

Take some ibuprofen, and it should get better in a week or so.

  13. ITS HORRIBLE, i still remember the pain from mine,

approx 5 days so they dont hurt, and then after each adjustment around a day.

tell them to put ice on their mouth, (on the outside not on their teeth, it helps)  take lots of ibprofin or tylenol to help with pain relief.

be supportive, if they dont want to eat, dont make them it is very painful, try maybe making fruit smoothies for them, they can prob get that down and gives them some nutrients.

be pateient, let them know it gets better, but it does suck for now.
