How long does it take to be able to get pregnant after removing an IUD (copper). ?

I had a copper wire (Paragaurd) IUD put in by Planned Parenthood about 3 1/2 years ago. My husband and I want to start trying to get pregnant, and I will be having it removed on the 16th of this month. Will my body return to normal immediately after having it removed? What are the odds that my fertility was affected by the IUD? (I know that my OB can answer these as well, but I wanted to hear other people's experiences.) Any other information, personal anecdotes on this subject would also be appreciated. Thanks to all who answer!

  1. I had the copper iud removed on august 7th and I ovulated(and concieved) on the 20th and just got my positive pregnancy test today! you are supposed to return to fertility right away. It is different than the merina iud(which has hormones, and works more like a birth control pill by surpressing ovulation as well as blocking the uterus) the reason is the copper makes your uterus/cervix acidic so sperm cannot servive, once it's removed and your cm is fertile(ovulation time) the sperm have nothing in their way anymore:~)

  2. Well, I had the mirena Iud.. and I am not 100% percent sure of that difference between the two- but I was told I could conceive right away. But after being on here and my own experience it can take longer than that. I am on the second cycle of TTC.. I wish I would have my removed sooner cause I wanted to be pregnant right now. I had mine for two years or so. But I have been researching this and I found that taking Evening Primrose during your period helps with your cervial mucus which can help sperm to live longer. And I also have learned about Red Raspberry Leaf (tea or infusion form) that help build up your Uterine Lining which is important after having a IUD. But these are just suggestions and always consult your OBGYN.. I was told it could happen right away but its not entirely true. I mean there are those that do, but than there are those that don't. I wish you the very best of luck to you- Baby Dust- Hopefully this Cycle will be it for me :)

  3. Sadly, I have a close friend who is on TTC month 4 after getting it removed. For some, it happens right away, for some it needs a little longer.
