  1. Depends upon your natural ability, how often you get to do it, the wave quality where are learning, etc.  2 years to be able to catch waves well and make some good basic turns is probably a good measuring stick if you live somewhere you can't surf everyday.

  2. 37 days

  3. It all depends on the person.

  4. It depends. You want to get good in 2 years? Surf beach breaks everyday with people who shred. Trust me if you surf with people who are killing it, it will push you to get better.  If you want to be a "kook" forever, surf on weekends at a slow mushy reef with all the rest of the weekend warriors.

  5. About 2 years. Seriously, although it depends on how crowded your local break is and how much time you want to devote to it. If you go every day to an uncrowded break you will pick it up a lot faster, maybe 1 year instead.

  6. many many moons

  7. There are really too many variables to put a time frame on it.

It depends not only on your abilities, (balance, strength, etc), but also your equipment, (I always recommend a longboard of at least 9' long for beginners), your location, (how far are you from the beach and how often can you go), and even what type of beach you go to, (gentles waves, crashing waves, lots of whitewater, etc).

You can learn to stand up in a day if you're fairly coordinated and have the right waves... but it can take months or years to develop an advanced style.

Here's a really great article I found that I always tell beginners about. It's called 'Learn How to Surf in One Day':

    Good luck!
