How long does it take to become a School Psychologist?

How many years of training/school all together does it take to become a school psychologist in New Jersey?

Doctoral degree in educational psychology (Ed.D) is the favored degree. You're looking at 4-6 years of grad school full-time in addition to a bachelors degree itself.  Don't confuse this position with a regular school counselor, which only requires a masters degree.

I cannot say for sure about the rules/requirements for New Jersey, but in Minnesota, and Nevada (where I lived for about 4 years) both required a minimum of a Masters Degree which is about 6 years in total.  You would need to get your Bachelors Degree from an accredited undergraduate college first- preferably in Human Services- Psychology, Community Psychology, Social Work, etc.  Then you would have to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and score high.  You would then apply to graduate school for the program that would allow you to become a school Psychologist.  If you went full time, starting in the Fall Semester, it would take an additional 2 years.

To became a school psychologist you need to have your masters degree in education/counseling  or a masters in psychology concentrating in children. To get into a masters program you need a 4 yr college degree with the majority of your classes in counseling, education or psychology. The masters program will run from one to two years if you are a full time student and this changes if you are studying part time. So it takes 5-6 years. Good luck.

To meet state certification requirements, you need 60 graduate hours in a school psychology program (2 years as a full time student) and a 1200 hour internship (1 year). As a full time graduate student, it will take you 3 years. Look at the NJ School Psych Association website for more details on state certification. Good luck!
