I am interest in become a SLP because I love helping people. I have an Associates in Science, so that should cut some of the time down. I read that you have to have a Masters to teach, does that incluce the teacher cert. or is that separate? Thanks.

  1. my sister-in-law is going for it.  she has an Associate in biology, so now for her to get fully trained, she has to get Bachelors (2 more years of Speach-related classes) and join a 2-year program (like Master's) after which she'll be able to work.  I am not aware whether you need a teacher's cert, though...  Good luck!

  2. You need bachelor's and master's degrees, plus a 9-month clinical fellowship after the master's before you are qualified to be certified by ASHA and licensed by your state's board. If you want to practice in the schools, you will likely need a teaching credential, too. Some states now will allow licensed speech pathologists to practice in the schools without a credential.

That adds up to about another 5 years, but it will be shorter if you go all year round. I did my master's in 15 months.

It's a great profession, and you'll always be in demand.

  3. For this particular career you need a Master's Degree. I don't think you have to become certified to teach anything. But I know they are in high demand and get paid very well.
