How long does it take to become a non-profit orig. If I start working on it to day?

I am seeking funding (a capital grant) from the VA to house and care for homeless vets (men and women). their application period begin in March and the application must be completed with 60 to 90days

The 501 (c)(3) paperwork can take just a few weeks. HOWEVER, doing all of the things you need to do BEFORE you file the paperwork (recruiting a board of directors and figuring out how much each board member will give/raise for the organization, developing a business plan that provides information on how many paid staff you will have and what your budget will be for the first year, and providing details on what you mean by "care" for homeless vets, etc.) takes several months.
