  1. private lessons are better for working on specific things not general learning. In BJJ you'll get better much faster in a normal class because you get to train with many people with different styles. There is no set time to become good some people it happens fast some slow. Definitely count on spending the better part of a decade if you want the possibility of being known by anyone.

  2. depends on how good the instructor is, how fast you pick it up, and how well you train. You do need exposure at some point to a class room environment so you can test yourself against other people.

  3. Believe me when I tell you this.  It not totally about skill.  It's more about conditioning.

EX.  You have a guy that has alot of skills but is out of shape.  You have another guy that has basic skills but has incredible cardio.

What will happen is that guy that has the cardio is gonna try those 3 or 4 techniques he knows until the other guy gets tired enough to slip.  Then he will finish the fight.

2 good examples of that is Matt Hughes defeating BJ Penn and Forrest Griffin defeating Shogun.

Get your cardio first and then work specifics.  What happens when you are tired is all the skills you have go out of the window.  Your mind is consumed with thoughts of basic necessities like oxygen and you won't be able to execute anything other than really simple tasks.

  4. 1 lesson....or 1000, it really depends on the person, by good, you mean decent, Private lessons would be better for styles like Karate or Wushu because it's more detail oriented and focused on forms, but for MMA, it's mostly sparring so a public class would be better due to the more variety in enemies. I would suggest joining a class instead of private.... for now at least. So, actually, it would take longer to be good at it if you take Private Lessons.

  5. Well, private lessons can run about $150 an hour but one hour is worth about a month of regular classes. With private lessons you'll get good pretty quickly. You may also want to consider taking a real martial art.

  6. better question. How will you know if your good if you take private lessons? each person has a unique style to them self. even ir you trained with Fedor himself alone for years it does not mean you could ever beat some one once you actually got in the cage/ring with them. because you would only know Fedors habits and not your opponents train and cross train with as many people as possible.

  7. Good Q! I wanna konw.. I wanna take BJJ & Tae kwan Do.. Classes are expensive as a mother focker though.
