How long does it take to build a house from scratch?

It depends on a lot of things, like location of lot,size of house, ect. You couldn,t get permits in three weeks . Of the custom homes I've worked on in California, with average size crews of subcontractors it usually takes a year to year and a half.

A modest 2000 sq. ft. home , foundation to finsh, could be built  by experienced professionals in 2-3 wks.

I have built some houses and can give you an idea. If you have skilled labor and lots of it you could have the keys in your hand in a few months. This presumes having all the building permits and house plans drawn up first and aproved and hiring a qualified general contractor. Extreme makeover uses hundreds of people to pull off thier stunt.
