I'm having such a hard time getting myself to put together a website for my small business. Luckily, I've been getting decent work without it. But, of course, I would get more work if I got my ducks in order, so to speak, by putting together a website & marketing myself on the web. I just feel frozen everytime I start looking at those online web builder sites. I feel like there is so much I have to tackle. Partly cuz I'm a perfectionist and I don't want to do a bad job. Partly it's cuz in my mind, it seems so stressful to do something like that. I get around fine on the internet like doing research, going on community boards like this, email and fun games and such. But, the idea of getting a website together just gives me a knot in my stomach like in college when I had to do a huge final project or the like. UGH! Please help! Any kind suggestions would be appreciated. TY!

  1. Well if youre starting an online business try seeing if any of your friends are interested. Working together with a friend makes things better and easier. This way it takes some of the stress off of you so you can focus plus bring more opinion and advice to the table.

Sorry if this doesn't help to much but it's the best answer I could think of.

  2. Rule #1 for avoiding getting overwhelmed: Start small and simple. I'd suggest building a single-page starter page as the first step.

You can put a banner across the top of the page with your company logo and company name. (If you have a company slogan or tag-line, that would be a good place to put it.)

Under that, a few paragraphs could be used to introduce yourself and your business.

At the bottom, you can list your contact information (address, phone, and email address).

Once that's up, you start thinking about the next steps. What you put up will vary widely across different types of businesses.

Do people come to your business location? If so, a map page showing your business location might be good to have. Listing your hours would be good to do here as well.

Do you have past (and current) customer testimonials? That would be another good page to have.

Do you have photos of previous work that you've done? A photo page would be ideal for showing off your completed projects.

When you've decided what pages you'd like to add to your site and built each of those pages, you can slide a set of links for navigating to them right under the banner at the top of the home page.

The key is not to try to do everything at one shot as that can become truly overwhelming.
