How long does it take to change ur name in ny???

well im under 18 yrs old so i would be considered as a minor but i really hate my middle name so my parents will change it but i want to change it before the end of school year so its not in the yearbook.......

how long do u think it will take.....if my dad goes to change my name around the end of october???........is it possible that it will change before may?

  1. First of all you must be 18 years old do this. See this web site:www.spid.org/resources/namechange. When you have reached you 18th birthday it will take one to four weeks

    I changed my last name in NYC.

    There is specific paperwork to file, and that takes about 6 weeks - they say it's quicker but it depends how behind the court is - took just over 6 weeks for me)

    then, you have to place an Ad in a designated newspaper for a week (I used the Village Voice - it only comes out once a week).

    then if the judge approves it (with your parents doing this for you, there is no reason to deny the request) you'll get your paperwork in about 2-4 weeks with your new legal name.

    So realistically, it takes about 8-12 weeks.

    However after that, make sure your folks update your name on Social Security, selective service, medical insurance, etc.
