It depends how adventurous you are.  If you are staying on a road, which is always a good idea, you really do not go all the way around the island.  You cut across about two/thirds of the way north (from the south) and stay on pavement.  The west side is stop and go in the town of San Miquel and there are a few lights on the transversial road which runs east and west.  Other than that it is a simple two lane road, which is best traveled during the day to avoid any accidents, potholes, scooters or critters.  There is much to see and your trip could be as short as an hour if you do not stop at all and go at a breakneck speed with no tickets.  Or, you may stop at a beach bar, a beach to snorkel, or a view to take pictures.  Most people make a day of it.  The island is about 20 miles long by 15 across but the road you will travel is about 15 miles north and south and perhaps 8 miles across.
