  1. Hola. I'm a single woman and I have made the trip many times (often by myself) and I find the trip relatively safe. You can buy mexican insurance over the border and yes you need to buy it. I use Segunda or Groupo National. It doesn't matter who.

p.s. the trip is 2 days if you don't drive at night. It is 1787 kms long from tijuana to cabo. (miles? you'd better learn metric -- its 1082 miles)

    Safety tips:

    1. Please don't drive at night - there are animals, and cars without headlights.

    2. Take extra supplies with you. Water, spare tire, extra gas. Some of the gas stations in smaller towns run out of gas.

    3. Don't stop for anyone trying to flag you down. If it appears serious drive to the next town and tell someone or call 066 (mexican 911)

    4. Stay on the main roads, don't go off on a side venture.

    5. If you do break down, stay with your car.

    6. Semi trucks usually drive down the center of the roadway. You may come upon them suddenly and since there are no shoulders you could be run off the road...practice defensive driving.

Also, alot of tourists aren't aware that the Mexican gov't have a free service for tourists. We call them the green angels. They are men in green and white towtrucks that drive up and down their assigned parts of the baja highway and stop and help you if you are broken down or have a flat tire. I can't tell you what a relief it is to have them pull up!

    Have a great trip.

  2. Over 24 hrs.  Site below says 22 but it is always optimistic.  2nd site is  good info about the Baja highway.

  3. I'm with these other responders in that its a long drive, estimated 24hrs from Tiajuana. The LA part of the drive isn't bad or hard to do. However, should you keep in mind that you are in Mexico and pace yourself accordingly, its a nice trip. But as the roads are narrow, shoulders tiny to zero, things happen. Then, you can't make good time, you wait. I'd think that the estimate of 2 days and a few hours the next day or later evening of day 2 would be more than reasonable. But, as already stated, know where your stops are and carry emergency items, water etc. Not many people live in the middle, its just the ends. Have a great trip. Check the Baja Insider website for road conditions and more info. www.bajainsider.com

  4. it takes a good 2 days the road is narrow,so you have to take it easy but it is well worth it.The drive is beautiful.top off you gas every chance you get just to be on the safe side.their are lots of gas stops now,be sure to stop at El rosario at mama Espinoza's(about 4-5 hours after Ensenada)and have lobster burritos, check out Santa rosalia, mulege and loreto...la paz, todo santos and los barriles.a good web site www.bajaquest.com

  5. 1,000 miles of the worst road you've ever driven.

You have to know where gas stations are located along the way.
