  1. I think it will take quite a lot longer to get to Colville from Auckland, at least 3 hours and probably more. Just leaving Auckland could take an hour at the wrong time, or from the wrong location. If you travel at a busy time, the amount of traffic on the road to the Coromandel is very high and the lack of safe overtaking opportunities makes for a slow ride.

On the positive side, this is not a landscape to race through as it's New Zealand, and hence very pretty.

As far as sunshine is concerned, it's important to go at the right time of year which is early January through to early May.

  2. In the long term Northland seems to get the highest temperatures in NZ, but the Coromandel is very nice.

It has been many years since I was last up there so things may have changed.

It is about 200km from Auckland depending upon where you are leaving from.

The link below is a route map.

    edit

That should have shown you the route but it doesn't.

If you type Queen St and Auckland in the top two boxes and Coromandel in the bottom right box it should give you a route map

    Sorry.

  3. At the moment, there isn't much sun in Northland but from seeing the weather reports during the year, it seems the norther bays (near Kerikeri and Kaitaia) are the places where temperatures are pretty warm. The Coromandel is a very popular tourist spot, even for New Zealanders!

As far as distances are going, it depends where in Auckland you will be leaving from. The AA road calculator should give you a good idea of distances:

I tried it and it says it would take 2h25 from Auckland to the Coromandel :)

    PS: I live in Auckland
