  1. Get out the road map moxie or at least look at Google Earth.  Fill up at Katherine and at the Threeways.  It's about 190km to next petrol at the Tablelands Highway turnoff, then another 260 to Camooweal.  Another 180 to Mt. Isa.  112 to Cloncurry,  180 to Kynuna, 162 to Winton, 171 to Longreach.  From there 108 to Barcaldine.  From there you can go through Emerald, Springsure, Roma, Miles, Condamine, Goondowindi and down the Newell Highway to Dubbo and turn east to Sydney.  Petrol at all those places.

It's about 4,000km so you are looking at 45 hours or so on the road.  5 days plus, the closer you get to Sydney, the slower your average speed.

Carry a liter or two of engine oil, maybe a spare fan belt and top radiator hose if the car isn't real new, make sure the spare is good and on a balanced wheel.  Carry about 5 litres of water per person, not cola soft drinks or milk which will go off.  Have at least 2 litres of water for the car, preferably 4. Check the oil every time you buy petrol or at least every second time.

  2. From RACQ Trip Planner

    Darwin CBD to Sydney CBD

    Distance - 3929.96 kms

Duration - 48:02 hours (NO STOPS included)

In reality the trip would take approximately 5 days with  stopping overnight, rest stops etc.

On the site you can get printable house to house Driving Directions, Places to Stop and other important information.

  3. A fabulous trip. I love travelling Australia . You have 2 choices here depending on what you want to see you can travel down to three ways and cut across to the east coast . several places to cut through to the Coast . Or you can go straight down the Centre through Alice Springs to Adelaide either travelling inland to Sydney or going around the Coast taking in The Great Ocean road . Which ever way you choose you will have a very interesting trip. Always fill up at each road house or town as you can travel a long way between fuel stops carry a bit of extra fuel and always carry water with you . A pillow is a must there will be many times you want to stop for a rest. This is an extremely long drive and the longer you can give your self the better . One week to travel this far is not long .

  4. It's 3,931 km so will take you about 1 day and 23 hours, just under 2 days continuous driving.

  5. It's 3,931 km so will take you about 1 day and 23 hours, just under 2 days continuous driving?????????

    that is impossible

    5 days is pushing it

fill up when your tank gets 1/2 empty

    rest/take a break when tired

    take extra water

don't drive at dusk & dawn (bloody roos)

    have a pleasent trip
