This is not a Visa...as I am a US Citizen...in the event the customs person stamps my passport...how long would the ext. to remain process take. Sometime they only stamp it for a 20 day visit...what would be the next recourse?

  1. you must apply for an extention at least one month before your visa expires, there is a big backlog in immigration and it can take at least a month

  2. It would be unusual for a US citizen to have his passport stamped for just a 20 day stay.  Usually a US citizen can stay in Canada for up to six months.

If you want to extend your stay, apply before your visa expires, whatever the length of time you were allowed to stay.  Make sure you keep a copy of your application to extend your stay, and keep proof that you have applied.  Once you have applied for an extension you are legal to stay in Canada until they have given you a response.  Whether or not the extension is approved will depend on your reasons for wanting to stay, whether or not they suspect you are working "under the bable", your sponsor in Canada, etc.  Without knowing the details of your situation, it is impossible to guess what the response to your application might be.
