I need to know because my boyfriend and I are going and he never had been on an airplane before. I did hear that it takes at least 18 hours. I do know that Germany is 9 hours ahead of pacific standard time.

  1. 11-13 hours from Westcoast USA plus stopover time if you have any. Generally speaking, it's better to fly with European carriers as US carriers tend to have another stop in the US {related to hubs}. Have fun in Germany, it's a great country. :)

  2. 12 hours including stop over with LH via Copenhagen.

  3. It depends if you flight non-stop, how many lay-overs you have.  But on the average - from Washington state to NYC is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours.  From JFK it is about 8 hours.

*I read your update*  You'll probably need 1 lay over to refuel.  Total flying time should be about 12 hours in the air - but it will say on your itinerary how long each leg of your trip will be - and if there is a lay over - it will say how long that will be.  If the lay over is an hour or less- make SURE you get to your gate/terminal FIRST before you stop to do some duty free shopping.  Otherwise, you could miss your flight on long lines for security.  Get to your gate first, check to see when they will start boarding, then go shopping or for a cocktail at the bar.  Enjoy the overseas flight - the domestic flight kinda bites - no food, no fun.  The Actual International part:  Food, your own TV Screen with 12 channels of movies, news, tv shows, opera, music, games. (And this is in coach).  Have a fun and safe flight!

PS - word of advice:  For international flights I know they say arrive 2 hours before your flight - but EVERYONE does and you'll be stuck standing on long lines.  Arrive 3 to 3 1/2 hours before.  No one should be there yet, so no lines.  You check in quickly, get rid of your bags and then after you go through security (also should be a short line) you can relax, have a little dinner, do a little pre-flight window shopping, etc...  Better to be REALLY early, then to arrive at the recommended time and have the stress of standing on line for 2 hours and running to the gate.

Also, check with the carrier and TSA - you might or might not be allowed any carry on luggage - and once you get to security it's too late to check that stuff in and they may make you throw out thinks like Sunblock, LipGloss, Toothpaste, etc...  Oh, also, depending on which airline you are flying (We took British Airways) they considered a PURSE a carry on bag! How crazy is that?

  4. I would guess 12 or 12 and a half hours flight time plus whatever interim stoppages you have...

  5. 10 or 11 hours
