Question:

How long does it take to get GP contacts?

I've worn glasses since I was 8 (I'm 16 now) but I'm finally getting contacts! I was wondering... if I wanted to get hard GP lenses, do I have to custom order them or something? The problem is that I start school on August 11, but my eye appointment (to get all the measurements and c**p done) isn't until August 7. I lost some weight this summer and I wanted to come back skinnier and without glasses, if I choose GP lenses can I get them quickly enough to wear them the first day of school? Also, I have astigmatism so I'm probably gonna need torics, can anyone give me a ballpark estimate of what some GP torics will cost?

Thanks a million.

  1. From the 7th to the 11th....hmmmm, nope,  you'll never make it.

RGP's are custom made, and take at least a week almost everywhere.

Then after that, the startup wearing schedule is a very slow process...it will take over another week before you can wear them for 8 hours straight.

But the main thing is...why on earth do you think you want RGP 's ?

They aren't used very often, and are mainly for very high prescriptions , or some medical reasons because of corneal problems.

As a young man, probably involved in sports and such...RGP lenses are probably a very bad choice...but I'm pretty sure your Dr. will tell you that when the time comes.

  2. It is possible.

Most private practices have major suppliers that have a specialty division dedicated to RGP lenses and can get them pretty quickly.

The hard part is the fitting, the teaching, and the Rx and measurment fine-tuning.

And most RGP's correct a good deal of astigmatism. If you have mostly corneal astigmatism, then you are in luck. Some types/materials can correct up to 5 diopters of corneal astigmatism!!!!!! most however correct for a smaller amout of it. If most of your astigmatism is in the irregular shaped intraoccular lens then you will need Toric lenses.

Chances are you have corneal astigmatism and that would not need to be corrected for in the RGP.

The RGP's are custom ordered and last for a year or so. Some for less, some for much more. I would expect a pair to cost between $70-$150, but the price greatly depends on the brand and style of RGP.

    Good luck whatever the case.

  3. Probably not due to the fact that results may take a few days to get the result and then you will probably have to schedule another appointment to get the contacts and see if they work. Although, there is a hope, you never know ^.^

    P.S. dont go anorexic lol
