How long does it take to get a security clearance?

It depends on your history, and if all your information you put down is accurate and allows the investagator to locate people and verify things. It also depends on the type of clearance.

I'm assuming you are not already in service. If you enlist, the highest clearance you will get initially is "Secret" (a step below top secret) This is a largely routine process where you may have to speak with an Officer or Homeland Security personnel. I never had to. By the time you graduate AIT, you should be good to go. If you're already serving, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on whether you were born in America and whether you have any criminal or political extremist activity in your background. The only people I saw have any trouble getting clearance were people not born here in the US. Typically, they would be interviewed by Homeland Security. Only a few weren't cleared, but those that weren't simply selected another MOS to the best of my recollection.

A secret clearance usually takes about 3 months. They usually just to a background check and maybe question a friend or two. Unless you have a felony, you should get a secret pretty easily and quickly.

As far as a Top Secret, that can take about 2 years, my renewal took 2 years. But, there was a huge backlog. They will question your references and those do take time to track down. Plus, hopefully they won't lose your paperwork.

Top secret clearance for military personnel takes about 6-12 months.  Mine took 7 months.

One of the main factors is how many things they have to check.  Things like finances, family members, criminal record, drug history, and overseas visits/contacts.
