I am getting an employment German visa, it has not been so much of a problem here in Chicago. My wife applies in Moscow for a dependant visa. How long does it usually takes to get it in german consulate in Moscow? They don't seem to be friendly at all on the phone. Thanks...

  1. They are a bit official and culturally reserved to aliens or foreigners. It may take even eight to nine months. The decision comes from Germany. Local embassy just process the application.

  2. According to my own experience (married to a German) from the moment ALL  required documents (translated and with apostille)  are submited it normally takes from 6 to 8 weeks before receiving an answer, as someone already said, according to the german diplomatic procedures, the consulate does not decide about visa matters but all documents will be sent to Germany to the headquarters of the Foreign Affairs Office in Berlin   . In some cases it may take a litte bit longer but that is usually an exception.

Just a question. Are you american citizen? if you are america citizen it would be easier to apply for your wife's visa in Germany as according to german law: "citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America may obtain any residence permit that may be required after entering Germany"

You can get more information here (official web of the German Foreing Affairs Ministry) :

or here (official web of the German Embassy in Moscow):

  3. According to the German Foreign office it takes about 3 months, but could take up to 6 months.

I'd advise you to get the visa for your wife from the Chicago consulate where you got your visa. They will be able to work on the process much faster.

In Moscow they don't know that you aready got your work permit....and it will probably take much longer.
