  1. Everyone is different.  Some people can smoke a few cigarettes and be addicted.  Some people can smoke over a few years and then give it up because they were never truly addicted.

  2. It can happen before you realize it, however, individual tolerances will vary, meaning some will become addicted more quickly than others but sooner or later they all will if they keep doing it.  Nicotine is a powerful drug, often compared to heroin in degrees of addiction.

  3. Getting addicted to Cigarettes is very easy. The first few can make you addicted. You can say that I am not addicted and can stop smoking any time I wish! Well it doesn't happen, as the craving for Nicotine keeps you dragging towards another puff!

Giving up needs a lot of will power and moral support. I gave up after 17 years of smoking and it has been 8 smoke free years now. Hence I know how easy it is to get hooked and how difficult it is to give up.

  4. Not long. You think you are OK. You keep smoking; alone or with friends, when you are out, having a drink... You say to yourself: 'It's fun. It's cool. I will never get addicted. I can stop anytime'

Then one day it hits you. 'I want a cigarette. I will just have one to make me feel better'.

Then you smoke for the rest of your life... and will probably die from your addiction.

    It is 'Highly Addictive'.

  5. Though a number of different factors influence the eventual addiction, I attest to the fact that it overwhelmingly depends on the type of person - whether they have an addictive personality, low tolerance, or even desire to develop an abusive habit.

I smoked for about a year, varying between one a week to half a pack per day, and never became even slightly addicted. Sure, I felt and enjoyed the effects of nicotine, so I continued. But I was always in control. Many criticize the smokers who swear that they can stop "anytime" they want, but some truly can. After I made the decision to stop, the last cigarette I allowed myself wasn't even enjoyable.

It really just depends on the individual - how they perceive the cigarette and the habit, and how their body responds.

  6. I think everyone is different, I know that once in awhile I smoke a few and can go years without smoking one.

I think like with every other addiction; it's mental.
