Question:

How long does it take to get approved to adopt a baby?

I am interested in adopting. I was wondering if anyone knew how long the process takes and how one qualifies to adopt. For instance, I'm single, not married and no kids. So would that be okay? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. call a adoption agency for these answers, they will help  you

  2. Yes that would be okay that your not married and adopt. All you need to do is call an adoption agency. Adopting is a wonderful thing to do. There are so many kids out there that need a loving home to go to.

I adopted my third child out... the timing wasn't right for me. I asked the new mom just a few months ago how long the process took and she told me that in some cases it could take as little as 6 months or as long as 2 years.

Good luck on your search hope all goes well.

  3. Would it be ok for whom?  I'd say, if you're not independently wealthy (i.e. you have to work), you should not adopt as a single mom, because adoptees have already been abandoned once (no matter the reason, it still feels like abandonment) - you don't want them to feel abandoned every day so that you can work.

ABOUT 25,ooo k overseas and you must be married

  5. It's easier if you're married. It depends on your work schedule and the age of child you're interested in. Some people wait up to 18 months.

  6. It depends on a lot of factors.  Where you are and what jurisdiction you are working in.  What your personal situation and circumstances are and how fast the agency wants to work.

Our first adoption took 6 weeks from the time we first approached the lawyer for the agency (it was an international adoption and we were living overseas in the country we were adopting from).

Our second one took 5 months.  We started the process in late Sept 07, had the home study done by mid Dec 07, were accepted into the program in mid Jan 08 and approved 18 Feb 08.  Later that same day we received a phone call asking if we were interested in a 4 day old who was being discharged from the hospital and needed a home to go to.  3 months later the adoption paperwork was done.
