In the state of Michigan. I hear it takes a couple of months but I haven't received it yet. I am supposed to get his income tax money that the state took because he is so far behind. He says he filed at the beginning of the year......however, I know there is a paper he must sign in order for it to be disbursed to me but he says he can't remember if he had to sign a paper or not. He said they also took his stimulus check....is that the same process?

  1. It can take up to six months for a tax refund to be disbursed.  But if he had other federal debt, back taxes or student loans, the government will take their share first.  I don't believe that there is a paper that he needs to sign in order for you to receive the funds.  If that was the case, many deadbeat parents wouldn't sign it out of spite.  He should call FMS, the department responsible for the garnishment, to see where the funds have gone.  The number is 800-304-3107.
