  1. In pure flying time, you are looking at around 20 to 21 hours in the air.

However, there aren't any direct flights from Austin to Canberra.  So you'd have to catch a domestic flight from Austin to Los Angeles, and then connect to an international flight to Sydney.  Once in Sydney, you'd clear customs, and then catch a domestic flight from Sydney to Canberra (the capital).  And so you'll have to add "holdover" time into these calculations.  Usually, you need to allow three hours between domestic and international flights.  So (all up), you are looking at the better part of 26+ hours travelling time (ie an additional 3-hours @ LAX and 3-hours changing from Kingsford-Smith to Mascot airport in Sydney).

Oh... and PS:  you'll cross the International Dateline, so you'll also lose a day.  In other words, if you were to leave Texas on Wednesday, you'd land in Canberra on Friday.

  2. The above answer is correct - the flying time would be about 20 hours, and you'd have to make 2 flight connections so the exact time would depend on exactly where you're making the connections and for how long.  (Most likely, you'd go to Los Angeles  - possibly San Francisco - and then to Sydney - or possibly Melbourne or Auckland - and then to Canberra).
