  1. It took me and my companion, carrying heavy packs, about 4ish hours to get to the bottom of the canyon, though we stayed at the campground near the river and didn't go quite all the way to Phantom Ranch.  The hike back up the canyon took ALL DAY with lots of rest breaks.
