Considering someone has no experience, is it possible to become a really good sewer in a short amount of time?

  1. Any skill takes time and practice but, sewing also needs creativity. I started when I was 13 years old with a home-economics class in jr. high school (a v-e-r-y long time ago) using a simple pattern and being taught by a very strict teacher. I was hooked after that.

A few decades later, I now design patterns, re-make old clothing into something new and different, and custom design and fit clothing for other people. HOWEVER....I am still learning something new every day. The amount of time and patience you invest in yourself will pay off with increased skill and efficiency. Classes will help and asking other people in fabric stores questions will also help. I've learned quite a bit from talking to people in stores. Also, you can find books and videos on different techniques. I find myself answering questions people have on a project they want to undertake but are unsure of a starting point.

Give it your best and above all, enjoy what you are doing. A skill in any craft requires you enjoy what you do. You can be good at anything, but you will shine when you enjoy it. Makes the finished project all the more precious to you.

    Happy sewing!

  2. i suppose being a good sewer, is all down to practice. On a machine it is easier to make things look more professional. But it doesnt take that long to become  agood sewer.

i would say aslong as you spend a good amount of time on the sewing machine ,and try out all the stitches on scrap material; you will become good, and  become confident with using a sewing machine.

  3. "sew well" and "really short" are going to be a matter of perspective. However, learning to use a sewing machine for basic sewing needs can be picked up in 1 to 2 weeks with a little practice. Reading and understanding a pattern can also be learned gradually but your best chance at learning how without a great deal of frustration is to start with simple patterns like pillows, christmas stockings or very basic skirts.

    Suggestions:

    1. practice different sewing stitches on scrap fabric first. This allows you to learn what the stitches look like and how fast or slow you can sew them to get good results.

    2. When starting out, over-pin your pattern to your fabric instead of under-pinning so that your pattern and fabric don't slip while you're cutting.

    3. Transfer all the little marks like darts or dots on the pattern to your fabric with dressmakers chalk. This will help you when reading the pattern and looking at the cut out pieces of fabric.

    4. Take a look at Sewing Basics in About.com (link below) They have some great tips plus definitions on many of the words you'll come across while learning to sew.

    Good Luck!

  4. Well, I usually manage to teach kids in less than a week, and have them turn out a fun project like a bag or a Christmas Stocking, so...  Getting good is all a matter of practice.  If you are prepared to spend an hour or so a day practicing things like seams and hems and all the other machine techniques, not too long.  You need to be kind to yourself and the machine, and patient with both!  ;)

  5. Maybe 3 projects, if you have someone to guide you through the first one and advise you through the other two. So I would say about a month.

    .

  6. It doesn't take long to learn how t use a machine well - but the things that distinguish a good seamstress involve a lot of other skills, including pressing their seams, fitting a pattern/garment, taking good measurements, learning about fabrics, needle sizes and threads, etc.

Things like setting in sleeves, and setting zippers also take extra practice.    I wouldn't plan on sewing a wedding dress any time soon...

You might have better luck, initially, working on non-garments. things like purses or whatever - where size/fitting isn't relevant - just honing your sewing skills.

  7. What is a short amount of time? It does take practice and you will need to take lessons. Take a beginner class and keep moving up.

First buy a sewing machine at a sewing machine store where they will give you free lessons on the machine you buy.

I would give it a year before you can be making garments well. But it is more than sewing. It is knowing about colors and fabrics. What fabric goes well with a pattern.
