  1. I can not seriously answer this question, because it depends on the talent of the student, the amount of time in study.

    The big error here is that ALL 8 grades.  No one ever totally masters any instrument. there is always room for improvement.

    Who ever divided the violin in to 8 grades did not intend that this is as far as you can go, or that someone on grade 6 is a better musician than someone on grade 5.

    Learn theory as you go along. If you learn what you need it will stick.  


  2. it all depends on how much you practice and how good you are. the more you practice the less time it will take.  

  3. When you're talking about "8 grades" I think you're speaking of the Canadian system and I don't know about that.  

    I do know about theory, however.  There are some really good beginning theory books for violin students.  Theory should be learned from the beginning.  See:

    If you're an adult student and you have a teacher to help you (which you should do), get the Essentials of Music Theory: Complete Self-Study Course.  This is really good stuff.
