I am 13 years old and i have just started ballet. Because i am so old, they put me in grade 2 straight away. How long would it probably take me to complete this grade and enter grade 3? I am really enjoying it but i want to get better and i'm not a very patient person so thanks.

  1. it usually takes a year to pass a grade, this uis to learn all the work and then perfect it. at my dance school we use 3/4 of the year preparing for the exams then do a large show at the end of the year, ballet takes alot of time to learn and alot of commitment if you want to be good, it is not something that you can pass in three weeks

  2. Well first of all it depends on how long it takes you to learn all the stuff. Because you're older and grade 2 is not that hard, it should not take you an incredibly long time. It's not enough just to know it - you have to be able to do it all with good enough technique and musicality. This depends on how hard you work, really - if you chose to start ballet at 13 I expect you have plenty of motivation - so work at it!

It also depends on how often you have the opportunity to do exams. I don't agree with the people who have said that they only occur yearly - many schools hold them more often, three times a year, twice a term, and some will have them far more often. Even if you take them at a location elsewhere in a session organised by the exam board rather than your school (in the way that all RAD major exams are taken) they happen a lot more than once a year!

If you're only taking one grade 2 class, you might be able to take another additionally on another day, or maybe take a grade 3 class as an extra. This will help you pass your exam faster, and if you take grade 3 as an extra, help you pass that faster too.

It's kind of hard to give an acutal estimate, having never seen you dance, so I can't really know how much you have to improve and learn and how long it will take you. I would expect it to take not much longer than a year as a guess, but you could probably do it faster if you work hard and keep enjoying it!

BUT, you'd be better off asking your teacher who can see you dance, knows how much you have to learn and improve, can guess accurately from that how long it will take you, and knows when you have an opportunity to take exams (and who you can ask to take extra classes if you want to), than take it from me, who can't tell any of these things.

  3. well i have been dancing for years im 15 n im in intermediate it normally takes a year to learn n b confident enough to be able to do your exams we normally start a new grade in January n do the exam in November...but thats at the studio i go to it might be different at yours you are better off asking your dancing teacher when she things you will be ready for it...

    but good luck with it

  4. Your grades are different to me, as i started ballet 2 years ago and i am in intermediate, and going to advanced 1 next year. We usually do a grade for 1 or 2 years, depending on how long it takes to prepare for the exam. Intermediate was only 1 year. But Advanced 1 is either 1 or 2 years depending on your teacher and when they want you to do the exam. I suggest you talk to your teacher about you moving up or when she thinks you will be ready to move up. Just make sure you dont go into a level that you arnt ready for. As i am thinking about staying back in intermediate as advanced is a little to extreme for me, only having 2 years of ballet experience, i would also reccomend you doing the exams, as i am staying back in intermediate so i cam conplete the exams.

    good luck and keep dancing!

  5. Exams are usually held yearly. If you are planning on taking this exam, then it will take you a year to learn all the work. However, if your schools doesn't do exams, or your not planning on, then talk to your teacher about moving up more quickly than the girls in your class. I take exams, so each year i move into a new level. However, some grades take several years to master all the work. My advice - speak with your teacher.

  6. hey there....

the answer that i have for your question is...... well it all depends on what your teacher thinks of how you are going. if you are doing really well and can remember your steps and can look very graceful and do everything to the best of your ability then you might be able to do your exam when ever your techer can fit you in with the examiner to to your exam. if you pass your exam then you start straight on to grade 3.

so the answer to this question is kinda up to you in how hard you work and how well you do. hint hint haha.

have fun, hope i have helped.

  7. ok well you sound like you might be doing the RAD syllabus so i would say that it wold take about 1 year. you would have a year to train and then would have your exam. if you are that anxious to get into it then you could talk to your teacher about doing 2 exams at the same time but i would advise that you do your first exam singularly and that maybe next year talk about it! you need to get a grasp on the technique, terms and just the way ballet is taught and danced before you start thinking about mulitpul exams.

BUT i will suggest this. maybe you should talk about taking grade 2 and grade 3 classes but this year just doing the grade 2 exam. so practice grade 3 over two years. and then do grade 3 and maybe 4 together. if that makes sense. but you will have to talk to you teacher about it! don't rush it too much. there was a reason why exams are only done once a year! happy dancing and good luck! =)
