  1. I think it's therapy for him ... but he needs a new hobby!

He's definitely wasting his time with the wrong tools. A little orbital or vibration sander will take weeks. (6 months? Is he sanding it by hand with #600 grit?)

A floor sander will do it much faster and more evenly.

How much faster? It should take about a day for a pro and maybe 2 days for a DIYer.

  2. tell him you notice it is taking some time, and he's probably making a good job at it, but would he like you to help so that he can finally get it finished. Hopefully he will say no but get the message that it's noisy and been going on for some long time.

  3. I'm so sorry for you.  We did that to ours before and it took no more than a week to do 3 rooms about 12x10 and we DID use hand sanders!!!  The people that lived in the house prior to us had loads of cats so ALL the carpet had to be removed and the wood floors beneath were in very bad shape.

It seems your neighbor has no clue what he's doing and there is no way it should take that long.

  4. Put your music up louder.

Give him a break.  None of us a perfect neighbours.  You probably do things that drive him nuts.

Ask him if he is willing to negotiate some time limits.

Like nothing on a Sunday, or before 11 on Saturday.  Nothing after 9pm.

On the bright side, he's probably raising the real estate values with all of his home improvements!

  5. A day with a floor sander, get a price list from hss for him and tell him to stop being an idiot
