How long does it take to travel from Rome to Pompeii?

Question

I'll be traveling to Rome for Christmas and I'd like to spend a day in another city/town, but I can't decide on one. Is Pompeii really worth a visit, and if so can I just spend a day there? Would it be better if I traveled to Florence?

Both Florence and Pompeii are worth a visit - but I would say that Pompeii is the more memorable - its 10 years since we went and can still remember every step - amazing. It takes a couple of hours on a coach from Rome - and we spent about 4 hours wandering around (buy a guide book or pay for the guided tour - if they oprate in winter- or if you are a cheapskate tag on the back of one!) -  have a good time .

It is worth it, we stayed in Rome then travelled down to Naples. There isnt much else to do in Naples but Pompei is worth it.  Be warned though you do really need a whole day there if you want to see EVERYTHING. There is a lovely house with wall paintings all preserved.  It is a bit shocking too though when you take in the scale of it but definitely worth it.  

I did look at Florence but havent been but it will probably be a lot further.  If you havent been to Ostia just outside of Rome then I would recommend going there (trying to find it by car is a nightmare, get a bus!)

If you do go to Pompeii, and by car then it's also easiest (but not very cheap) to park in one of the carparks opposite. (beware tacky souveniers)

The best idea might be to fly into Rome, but book in a hotel for one night in/near Pompeii - because you can spend a lot of time there. It also prevents your trip there from being too rushed. Florence is an excellent place to go if you are interested in art and other museums - but otherwise, I would recommend going to Pompeii instead.

Day trip from Rome to Pompeii would be a long day, especially if you include looking at Pompeii.

It took us about 3 or 4 hours by car from Fiumicino to Pompeii, stopping occasionally at the Autogrills. We booked into the Hotel Iside, which is about 4 or 5 minutes walk tothe gates of the archeological dig; parked the car in the orange grove behind the hotel. We spent the whole next day at the site and it was barely enough. But for others, I'm sure half a day would be fine. You can also catch a local bus to the top of Vesuvius - there is a bit of a trek to the crater itself, but what a view!!!

Florence would be better if you wanted to see the David, the Duomo, the Baptistry Doors, the Ponte Vecchio, and the Ufizzi Gallery. I suppose it's just a matter of whether you prefer ancient or renaissance?

Rome to Naples on the high speed train is an hour and a half.  By regular fast train it is two hours.  From there you must catch the commuter train to Pompeii.  This is about a half hour ride.  This commuter train comes every half hour so you  could end up waiting a half hour if you "just miss" the last one out of the station.  So, realistically, your trip can take just over two hours (if you are able to get right onto the commuter train) or up to three hours ( if you have to wait a half hour for the commuter train).  Once you get to the Pompeii scavi stop it is about a  5 minute walk to the entrance of the ruins.  This is an all day trip and you will be tired at the end of the day.  Leave early and return late.  It is well worth the trip and not to be missed.  You won't have to spend the night in Naples but try to leave the site by about 5 or 6.  

Florence is about an hour and a half away from Rome also.  It is a nice day trip to make but I would prefer to go to Pompeii.
