How long does it usually need to get a freshly applied for passport in India?

This is for my parents, both of whom are senior citizens.They have been told that a fresh passport shall take minimum six months to get issued.I am not too convinced about this time line.Does anyone here have a concrete idea on how long it may take?Also, are there any conveniences for senior citizens?

i dont think it may take 6 months......Now a days Formalities have been reduced....tere r two ways for applyin.....First  if u need it urgent u have to pay pay some 1000xta n u vil get in 30 to 40 days.....    

    Second u pay te normal money n u vil get within 100days....Am fom Tamil Nadu..Here itz te procedure...It depends on ur place....I dont think tere vil be much differnce as itz under control of Central Goverment....i dono anythin ab offers for senior citizens

I think somebody has misguide you.For getting fresh passport only 4 to 6 week enough if you have the all bonafied required documents like proof of age,residence address etc as listed in the application form.If you know to some ghazzetted officials of Indian Govt. you can get passport within a weak itself in TATKAL SECHEME.

ur right. it doesnt take so  many days. The procedure is that u need to fill the form right and enclose the necessary docus and a photo with DARK background. do that properly and submit it in the passport office who will then send ur info to police who will come to ur place for verification. they will send the report back and then after procedural formalities, the passport can be issued - this takes about a month or a bit more.

However if u need it urgently there is a tatkal (immediate) scheme for which u need to pay Rs. 1500 extra and u will surely get ur p/port within 15 days.

U can get the form from internet and prnt it. Take three print outs if ur parents r residing in one place for more than 5 years. If they have changed residence in past 5 yrs, u will have to print three forms separately for that place as well.
