I have memorized the Toccata, and about half of the first movement in about 6 weeks, but I'm wondering, am I a slow learner? How long does it usually take to memorize a piece like this? I want to have it ready by September for my pre-audition tapes, but I'm just curious as to how long it takes most people to memorize this piece. Also, when Conservatories ask for a substantial 20th Century piece, would the Toccata count, or would I need to play the whole suite? Thank you!

  1. It depends on how you are memorizing the piece.  Active memorization involves much more than simply playing the piece over and over until you remember it.  There are strategies involved for ways to speed up the process.  You can find many books and websites devoted to the subject.

This book, while somewhat not the best overall book on piano technique, has a fabulous section on memorization.
