  1. a few hours maybe, a day, a week, a fortnight who can tell.

there's a number of variables including but not limited to

    a) when your even called to begin deliberations

    b) the severity of the offense whether it be civil, criminal or if your especially unlucky class action

    c) sadly publicity will play a large part in the length of your civil service....just look at the o.j. trail lol i must've watched that show for a solid year.

anyways your probably better off using a search engine to find the web-page for your county's court system it always has a great FAQ section

  2. In NY, most people spend a day, a  few days or a week.  There is a law where you can say you cannot serve longer than 2 weeks.  So if you think it will be a long case or require sequestering, you might be able to get out of it.

If you serve on the Grand jury, it is usually 2-3 days/week for 1 month.  I think it's harder to get out of that.

Bring something to read because it can get very boring sitting around & waiting.
