How long does my cellphone store archived voicemails?

I have an AT&T Razr V3.

I had a voicemail pop up as new that I know is over a year old - it was from my mom, she died over a year ago and I know I never stored that voicemail - it was from the first day I had my phone and she was just testing the voicemail...

My phone said to press 1 to listen to my message and it was the one from over a year ago...

The voicemail messages are not stored on your phone but on a system on the AT&T network.  I've heard of messages being delayed by a few hours or even a day but this is the first incident of a message delayed by over a year since the system isn't designed to hold messages past 14 days unless you have a much older voicemail platform.
